A 19-year-old man has been arrested after thousands of dollars of damage was done to several Nanaimo soccer fields on the weekend.

Early Sunday morning a vehicle was spotted, “pulling donuts” on a field.

Within minutes police located an older model Jeep with grass and mud stuck to the tires and frame.

The driver was arrested for mischief over $5,000 and was later released. He will appear in court May 24.

The suspect is being investigated in connection with damage to at least five other playing fields throughout central Nanaimo.

Frustrated city officials say the vandalism comes at a time when city crews were preparing fields for upcoming ball seasons.

“Now we have to start the process all over again”, says park operations manager Al Britton.
