Early childhood development program receives more funding

It is a program that helps Okanagan children with their early development and now a local Native band is jumping on board to help fund it.

The Central Okanagan Family Resource Program has been running for eight years. It supports parents who have children up to six years old.

Early childhood educators are on-hand to help parents with anything from how to deal with child tantrums to enjoying playtime with their kids.

Now the Westbank First Nation, WFN, is throwing its support behind the program by contributing $30,000 for the next three years.

“In the past, the Westbank First Nation has utilized the program and the funding that was available. We as a community like to give back to the community,” said Lorrie Hogaboam, a councilor for the WFN.

“So many of these parents, they do not know what to do with a tantrum and they don’t know where to access child development stuff or food bank information or family violence…so we are here as a support for them,” said Jodi Quibell of the Central Okanagan Family Resource Program.

The program is funded by various partners including the United Way. It is offered three days a week at the Martin Avenue Boys and Girls Club in Kelowna.
