North Battleford residents warned to stay away from river

Residents in North Battleford are being asked to stay off of, and away from, the North Saskatchewan River.

Officials in the city say the river is expected to rise by as much as two metres in the coming days as a result of rain in Alberta.

The region also had significant rainfall over the weekend, with around 50 mm falling and more expected this week.

“It is already muddy along the shore and more rainfall is expected this week, so the areas around the river are slippery,” said North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Chief Brian Wilson.

Wilson also said although increased river flows are interesting to watch, it can also be extremely dangerous.

“If someone were to slip and fall in the North Saskatchewan River, they could be carried downstream quite quickly.”

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has issued a high-water advisory for the area.

SWA says flows on the river at the Alberta border are expected to increase by 600 cubic-metres-per-second over the next several days, more than two-and-and-half times the current rate.
