UPDATE: Ashton Creek flooding: road re-opens, evacuation alert in effect

An evacuation alert remains in effect for a flood ravaged community in the North Okanagan.

The alert for Creekside Mobile Home Park, which is seeing water from Ashton Creek eat away at a nearby embankment, was issued on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and will remain in effect until further notice, according to Helen Sinclar, emergency management coordinator. The rush of water from the creek has already washed away several feet of property from the mobile home park.

The alert covers 22 mobile homes. Sinclair says it appears the majority of residents in the mobile home park plan to stay.

Sinclair says residents should have their belongings together and ready if they need to evacuate at a moment’s notice. She also issued some words of caution for other residents who live in flood prone areas.

“Get out and sand bag before something happens. Take precautions within the home for pets. Get your documents ready. Get your insurance papers together. Know where it is so you can get it and leave if an evacuation order comes down,” said Sinclair.

Resident Margaret Morris tells CHBC News a 16 foot shed at the back of her trailer was washed right off her property and down the creek.

Other neighbours say they had two dozen feet of property swept away by the raging waters.

Meanwhile, Mable Lake Road near Enderby is now single-lane alternating traffic. It is expected to remain that way overnight. Sinclair says there is no word on when the road will return to full traffic flow.

The road had closed Tuesday night due flooding. Half of the road has been washed away.
