WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government says most people affected by last year’s severe flooding have received at least an initial compensation payment.
Infrastructure Minister Steve Ashton says payments have been issued to more than 65 per cent of applicants under a recovery program and more than half of applicants have been paid under the disaster assistance program which is cost-shared with Ottawa.

Some home and cottage owners along Lake Manitoba have accused the government of moving too slowly.
Hundreds attended a meeting this week to discuss a possible class-action lawsuit.
Ashton says the government is working as quickly as possible and has brought in outside help, including appraisers from other provinces.
