The Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design is offering a woodworking class this year specifically for women.

“I think that there’s a demand for it,” said Veronica Post, the instructor of the eight-week class. “When I started school, for example, I was the only girl, and so I already felt like an outsider.”

The classes, which started on Jan. 31, are held on Sundays.

Students at today’s class worked on building their own pedestal table.

“I had already been thinking of doing historic preservation as a career because my undergrad’s in history, and I also knew I really liked hands-on work, so it kind of combined the two,” said Aleen Stanton, a student of the class.

Kathleen Bell signed up to help her eventually build a tiny house.

“My husband and I have been researching about it for like three years now, and we’d like to do all the work ourselves, as much of it as we can,” Bell said.

Post said having a class of only women helps them feel more comfortable with learning the craft.

The eight four-hour classes cost $385 in total.
