City of Toronto under extreme cold weather alert

Toronto has called an extreme cold weather alert as the temperature dropped below -15C.

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health has issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert for the city on Thursday.

The temperature dipped below -15C overnight and the advisory is in effect until further notice.

The Medical Officer of Health issues Extreme Cold Weather Alerts when Environment Canada forecasts a temperature of -15C or colder or a wind chill of -20 or colder in the city.

Residents are encouraged to call or visit vulnerable friends, neighbours and family to ensure they are not experiencing any difficulties related to the weather.

The alert also triggers cold weather services for homeless people, including TTC tokens for people to get to shelter and increased street outreach.

The city also operates two 24-hour drop-ins from Jan. 1 to Feb. 29 during cold weather alerts.

Anyone who see someone on the street who needs outreach support are encouraged to call 311.
