Taxi companies sound off about new accessible licenses

 Taxi service has long been a sore spot with Calgarians-now, the city has taken steps to get more cabs on the roads.

55 new accessible licenses will be handed out, although they do come with some conditions. Drivers with the new plates will have to work between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Taxi companies will also have to equip their vehicles with GPS systems.

However, some companies complained that the recommendations will increase the cost of doing business, and that there was no proper consultation.

“They’re trying to micromanage the industry and that’s not going to work,” said Roger Richard, president of Associated Cabs. “If mayor Nenshi wants to micromanage this industry, the first thing he should do is buy it, then he can run it and pay the bills.”

Taxi companies have to start submitting data by July 2, or they face a $2000 fine for each day of non-compliance.
