CALGARY – Calgarians are finding themselves in a heat wave in February, and some are getting an early start on warm weather activities.
The phone is ringing off the hook at the Inglewood Golf and Curling Club as eager duffers call in asking when the season will open, staff said Monday.
“We expect to have an early start in 2016,” Jeff MacGregor, head golf pro at the 18-hole course in southeast Calgary, said.
“There’s still plenty of snow on the ground, but our driving range may be open in March, and the course may be open in April.”
“It’s all weather dependent, but we have our fingers crossed.”
City of Calgary asphalt crews have been filling in potholes ahead of schedule–about 200 so far in the northwest zone during the past two weeks.
“Our pot hole patrol officially kicks in after spring cleanup,” Brittany Kuster, spokesperson for the city’s roads department, said.
“That will likely be in about two months, but they are getting an early jump due to the warm, dry weather.”

It is widely accepted that the definition of a heat wave is three or more consecutive days with temperatures at least five degrees above average.
On Thursday, the daytime high was 5.8 degrees Celsius; Friday it was 10 degrees Celsius; Saturday was 7.3 degrees Celsius, and the unofficial high on Sunday was 5.2.
It looks like this trend will only continue, with a forecasted high of 11 degrees Celsius Monday, followed by 15 degrees Celsius Tuesday and 13 degrees Celsius Wednesday.
The temperatures will be so warm over the next few days, that our overnight lows will be warmer than our typical daytime high.
