City buys golf course for Kelowna airport expansion

KELOWNA – The City of Kelowna is now in the golf course business.

It has purchased the 18-hole Shadow Ridge Golf Club to facilitate future expansion of the adjacent airport.

“The purchase of this property was exceptionally important,” says Airport Director Sam Samaddar in a news release. “As we’re unable to move the airport, we need to ensure that we have the available land to support the growth of YLW for future generations.”

The golf course will remain open for the foreseeable future.

“Our members can continue to expect the same great experience at Shadow Ridge,” says Shadow Ridge general manager Dan Weddell. “Membership, rates and amenities will remain unchanged as we transition ownership to the airport.”

The $5.4 million cost of the 84 acre property came from the airport reserve fund and not from general taxation.
