Infant death triggers homicide investigation near Manitoba First Nation

WINNIPEG — A two-month-old baby girl has died following injuries reported earlier this month.

RCMP responded to an area new Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation on Jan. 4 after reports the baby was badly hurt. She was transported to local a local hospital and later transferred to a Winnipeg hospital. She passed away on Saturday.

“This is the saddest of tragedies for the community and all Manitobans.” said Sgt. Bert Paquet of the Manitoba RCMP.

“Based on our investigation to date, we can say that other children are not at risk. While we understand that a lot of questions are being asked about this case, our focus remains on the investigation in order to bring answers to the community.”

The mounties told Global News that exceptionally sad cases like this are difficult for all investigators involved, and the officers who respond to such calls.

“For the officers involved, it always brings an extra challenge to cases like this but also an extra motivation to solve cases like this,” Sgt. Paquet said.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation from the serious crimes unit.
