SASKATOON – A condolences book in a Saskatoon funeral chapel is one way residents can offer support for those affected by Friday’s deadly shootings in La Loche, Sask.

“We wanted to give the people of Saskatoon an opportunity to share their thoughts, to offer their condolences, to help them to feel that they’re able to do something as well, even though they’re a long distance away,” said Derryl Hildebrandt, the Park Funeral Home director.

The funeral home has set up a small memorial in their chapel, consisting of a picture collage and candles. Hildenbrandt said the book of condolences will be sent to La Loche after the group gives Saskatoon residents a week to come and sign it.

“The families up north need to know that there’s other families that are thinking about them and are concerned about their well-being and what’s happened to them in this tragic situation,” he said.

As of Monday afternoon, Hildenbrandt said only a few people had come to sign the book, but added that those who did, thanked him for the opportunity.

“I can tell that they were just pleased that they were able to do that,” said Hildenbrandt.

The funeral home isn’t the only place in Saskatoon where signs of support for those in La Loche are on display. Flags at all City of Saskatoon buildings are flying at half-mast to “honour all the victims of the shootings,” according to a media release.

A social media post also showed a Canadian flag at half-mast on the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School’s office building in downtown Saskatoon.
