After more than 50 years, the flags at Riverside Golf in Surrey are coming down for the last time this evening.
“We’re sad, very sad,” says owner Ken Poirier, who went on to say Sunday is the final day for Riverside Golf.
“It’s been very heartwarming, the support from the community. We’ve had so many people come in to say hello and thank us.”
The par 3 course, driving range and pro shop in south Surrey have been expropriated by the city, which wants to extend Crescent Road and build a marsh.

“We don’t understand why they want to spend so much money for a small road that will only benefit one or two developers,” says Poirier.
Fans of the golf course have been fighting the closure for months. But the city refused to allow Poirier to present a petition to council because of expected legal action.
“They are forcing us off this property. We will continue to try and keep the pressure up on the city,” says Poirier, who claims the city only valued his property for one rural home.
“There is no lawsuit currently, but that seems to be what the city wants. Sweep it under the table, everyone forget about it.”
