TIPS: Keeping your home safe over the long weekend

If you’re going away for the Victoria Day long weekend, don’t forget to protect your home.

Calgary police say 1 in 10 break-ins happens when homeowners are away.

“The points of entry on these break and enters are actually unsecured doors and windows, so by just making sure your doors and windows are properly locked you can eliminate a tremendous opportunity for any potential criminal,” says A/Sgt. Stu Simpson.

Police say you should work to increase home security year-round, not just when you are away from home.

There’s been an eleven per cent increase in home break-ins in the first three months of this year, compared to last year.

FIVE TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME SAFE:

– Have deliveries, such as newspapers, stopped.

– Have a neighbor or friend check your home.

– Leave inside lights on a timer.

– Don’t leave computers or valuables visible through windows

– Lock parked vehicles and remove valuables and garage door openers.
