It was a lucky break for the Victoria nightclub Distrikt on Thursday night, as a car crashed into the building and tumbled down the stairs.
A 63-year-old was driving an Acura around 6 p.m. when he failed to turn at an intersection and went full speed through the doors and down the stairs into the club.
“It was lined up perfectly,” said Victoria Police Sgt. Glenn Vermette, who said it was lucky it was empty at the time.
“Had it been packed, like it might be later on tonight, there could have been some significant injuries or even death.”
Police say alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash, although they suspect medical issues may have played a part. The driver has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
There was significant structural damage to Distrikt, which is part of the expansive Strathcona Hotel.
Douglas Street was closed for sometime while crews removed the car, but has since reopened.
