Winnipeg’s Red River skating trail opens

WINNIPEG – Manitobans can officially dust of their skates and start lacing up, the Red River Mutual Trail at The Forks is open to the public.

The Forks made the announcement Thursday morning.

“Grab your skates and come on over, the Red River Mutual Trail is open,” said Paul Jordan, CEO of the The Forks in a press release.

“Winnipeggers haven’t been able to stop talking about when the rivers will be frozen enough to skate on, and today is that day.”

The release said over the upcoming weeks, the trails will host everything from a curling bonspiel, events for Festival Du Voyageur, as well as the inaugural Winter Derby.

There is also a variety of free family activities at Arctic Winter Park every Sunday until the end of February. It includes horse-drawn wagon rides, indigenous programming and snowboarding instruction from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Last year the Red River Mutual Trail opened at the start of the new year. This year’s trail is about a month behind schedule due to warmer than normal winter temperatures.

The Forks tweeted out the announcement Thursday morning with a video.
