The de Havilland Beaver crashed on a hillside above Highway 97C soon after taking off from Okanagan Lake on a flight to Pitt Meadows, where Moyes kept the plane.

Drivers along the highway witnessed the crash and said the plane appeared to be trying to gain altitude when it slammed into some trees and burst into flames.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the accident and has recovered the engine from the crash site.
