BROSSARD – The City of Brossard has changed its mind, and will now allow the Repercussion Theatre to perform its Shakespeare in the Park plays.
In December, Amanda Kellock, artistic director of the theatre company, received an email from the city explaining that their reason behind the ban was that the plays are performed in English.
She insisted her company has been putting on Shakespeare in the Park performances in many Francophone cities across Quebec without any problems, so it shouldn’t be different in Brossard.

A city planning committee meeting Jan. 12 reversed the decision.
Kellock told Global News she couldn’t be more thrilled, both with the outcome of the decision and how quickly the issue was resolved.
The city had originally said it would only talk about possible outdoor shows if they were performed in French, which was “surprising, considering they have such a high population of Anglophones,” Kellock told Global News.
“An actor who can perform Shakespeare in English is not the same actor who can perform Shakespeare in French and so, unfortunately, we can’t afford to do both of those things,” she said.
The Repercussion Theatre’s first performance will be the all-female production of Julius Caesar in July.
