MONTREAL – The Save Lakeside Academy committee reached a small milestone Monday night.
The school was marked for closure following the announcement of major school changes by the Lester B. Pearson School Board, but there might still be a chance to keep it open.
The group received some much needed support from the mayors of Lachine and Dorval, Claude Dauphin and Edgar Rouleau, respectively.
Council members in both boroughs adopted a resolution to keep Lakeside Academy open.
Members of the parent-based Save Lakeside Academy group showed up in droves to witness the event, sporting Save Lakeside t-shirts and armed with petitions.
The committee also launched a petition requesting an intervention from the provincial government.
It hopes to have enough signatures by Jan. 19 before sending it off.
Lakeside Academy is the only English school on the Dorval/Lachine territory.
Many parents argued the closure would be detrimental to the Anglophone communities in those neighbourhoods.
The LPBSB has not commented on whether it will reconsider keeping the school open.
