12-year old explains ‘corrupt Canadian banking system’

TORONTO – Viral videos usually feature cats, kids with a lot singing talent or an experiment gone wrong.

It may be surprising then that Ontario native, 12-year-old Victoria Grant’s video, giving a scathing review of Canada’s banking system, has gone viral overnight – or even that someone her age is discussing this topic in the first place.

The elementary school student caught the attention of blogs and internet news sites after she appeared at a Public Banking Institute conference in the United States and the video went viral.

Her father has been posting her videos on Youtube for the past month. According to Huffington Post, Grant has been giving a rehearsed speech to audiences at conferences about this topic.

Her speech centers on the idea that Canadian taxpayers are being duped by the banks and the government because borrowing money now happens from the private banks at commercial interest rates. Until the 1970s, the government borrowed directly from the Bank of Canada.

Some critics – like her – say the government is now unnecessarily paying extra in interest costs to cover private banks’ profit margins. Criticism of her video has also started as some people on Youtube suggest that Victoria did not write the speech herself.
