A California mother handed her infant child to a firefighter during a harrowing rescue when an apartment fire forced her out a second-storey window.

The Fresno Fire Department said a baby and seven adults were rescued from the fire early Saturday morning. The Fresno Bee reports that the fire started just before 5:00 a.m. Saturday. One man was able to escape and alert neighbours, who in turn flagged emergency services. Authorities have not released the names of those involved.

“It was apparent that the second storey of the apartment complex was actually charged with smoke,” public information officer Pete Martinez told KGPE.

Dramatic footage released by the fire department captured the view of one firefighter via a helmet-mounted camera. After climbing a ladder to a window, a visibly distressed mother could be seen scrambling to hand her baby over to the firefighter to save it from the flames.
