LETHBRIDGE – An autopsy was conducted Monday following the suspicious death of a 78-year-old woman.

Family members discovered the woman’s body in a home on Normandy Road South just after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Lethbridge Police are not commenting on the investigation and will not release the woman’s identity.

Neighbors tell Global News the woman who lived inside the home is Irene Carter. They said she lived alone after her husband recently moved into an assisted living facility – the pair were snowbirds, typically spending winters in the United States.

“A constable came, informed us of what had happened and it was at that point that I was a little surprised,” said one neighbour. “He said that she was found probably after a couple days after she had passed.”

Those living near the home said they did not see anything suspicious, but found the heavy police activity in the area concerning.

“The first thing I thought of was just my kids walking to the bus and from the bus,” added the neighbour. “We asked the constable what he thought and suggest what we do, and he said merely to just keep an eye out for (anything) suspicious or out of the ordinary, which we hadn’t seen up to this point.”

The investigation is still ongoing into the circumstances of the woman’s death.
