CALGARY – Did someone buy you coffee today? A transit ticket? Or maybe you were the recipient of a “hot-dog hug”?
If so, it may have been the work of a Calgary family who started a movement now spreading across the globe.
“Spread the Love” is a campaign started by the Blackburn family three years ago to honour their late mother. Jan. 13 was her birthday.
“Birthdays are a little bit tough… so it was kind of a way to turn a sad day into a happy day,” daughter Breanne Blackburn said.
Wendy Kent-Kiddell died almost four years ago after a seven-year battle with cancer. Her kids are immortalizing her loving spirit – by sharing her legacy.
“It’s not just about my mom, it’s about spreading the love. It’s about giving back your community in honour of whoever you know that’s been affected by cancer,” said Wendy’s son, Kevin Blackburn.
The movement is growing, with over 800 members now part of the “Spread the Love” Facebook page and random acts of kindness being carried out in Wendy’s name, world-wide.
Among the family’s acts of kindness Wednesday, was stopping at a senior’s centre for a dance and handing out flowers, coffee, gift-certificates, c-train passes and plenty of hugs.
“It’s something I wish she could have been here to see.”
