It’s a good time of year to be in the home fitness business. January always brings out a whole new crop of resolution makers, searching for the perfect machine that will finally get them in shape.

Clint Pratch manages Flaman Fitness in West Kelowna. He cautions against jumping on board the latest fitness trend if it isn’t something you will enjoy in the long run.

“If you buy a rowing machine and you’re not into rowing, you’re probably going to look at it and go ‘I’m not into rowing’, so clothes will start to pile up on it,” says Pratch.

He says resolution makers start out strong, because they want to feel good and lose a few pounds, but if they don’t see results quickly enough, or they try to do a workout that is too hard for them, they often stop.

Greg Scott is a physiotherapist with Kelowna Physiotherapy Associates.

He says people can get injured if they work out beyond their fitness levels or without proper form.

“You can have ongoing acute sprains or ongoing repetitive strains,” says Scott, “or you could be strengthening the wrong muscle groups relative to other muscle groups.”

Both experts say results are better if you consider your starting fitness point, learn how to do the exercises correctly and keep a workout routine as part of an overall lifestyle change, instead of a quick fix to reach a set goal.
