Man charged after window smashed at Toronto bakery giving out Powerball lottery tickets

TORONTO — A man has been taken into custody after a window was smashed at a Toronto bakery offering free tickets to the US$1.5 billion Powerball lottery jackpot.

Police spokeswoman Caroline de Kloet says the man is facing four charges including mischief after the incident at World Class Bakers on Wednesday.

The bakery is giving away tickets for anyone spending at least $20 on baked goods.

Manager Suzanna King has said business has jumped since the promotion was announced on Monday. The tickets are bought in Buffalo, N.Y. and brought up north.

A line stretched outside the bakery starting before sunrise Wednesday and continued throughout the day.

Canadians are eligible to buy tickets to the U.S. lottery jackpot which are not sold in Canada.

However, Powerball warns on its websites against buying tickets from third-party resellers online.

The jackpot draw will be held at 11 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
