WARMAN, Sask. – Residents in Warman, Sask. may have to wait longer to see a doctor in their city after a number plan to leave in the coming months, according to the city’s mayor. Four of Warman’s five doctors are slated to leave the city to further their careers, according to Sheryl Spence, the community’s mayor.

She said she does not expect the process to find replacements to be quick.

“We are concerned, because I do think that there’s going to be a little bit of time where service will be interrupted,” said Spence, who learned of the departures in November.

“I think that probably some people that did have doctors here in the clinic may have to go to Saskatoon.”

Warman’s one clinic has been “incredibly busy” according to Spence. She said the ideal number of doctors for the city of roughly 10,000 residents would be between eight and 10.

“I think the workload for the doctors that [were] there was pretty intense,” said Spence.

Spence added that officials will need to talk to the departing doctors in an effort to see how the city can better retain physicians in the future.

“We need to listen, we need to hear what they have to say and just see as a community where can you help, what can you do,” said Spence.
