SASKATOON – Last Friday the Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team played its first game in nearly six weeks. It would have been understandable if the hockey dogs came out a little bit rusty after such a long layoff, but the Huskies were razor sharp.

The dogs secured back to back road wins against the Lethbridge Pronghorns, strengthening Saskatchewan’s position atop the Canada West standings.

“It’s always tough mid-season taking a month and a bit off,” said Huskies defenceman Zak Stebner, “especially having such a successful beginning of the season, you want to come out the second half and have the same jump.”

It has been a dream season for the Huskies. The team has improved in nearly every single major stat category from last season.

2014-15: Goals-per game – 2.25
2015-16: Goals -per game – 3.89

2014-15: Goals-against average – 2.93
2015-16: Goals-against average – 2.43

Even with ten games remaining in the 2015-16 campaign, the dogs have already racked up seven more points than they did all of last season and has opened up a five point lead over the second place Alberta Golden Bears.

Finishing first in the Canada West is a goal for the Huskies, but they know it will be a challenge with the back-to-back University Cup champs within striking distance.

“I think the reminder to all of these guys was, if you get a little ahead of yourselves, you can lose two straight in our league pretty quick,” said Huskies head coach Dave Adolph.

The Huskies are back in action on Friday night at Rutherford Rink when they play host to the Calgary Dinos.
