VICTORIA – Recent major earthquakes around the world prompted a new assessment of education facilities in B.C. which found portions of 152 schools are at high risk in an earthquake.
Engineers and geoscientists used the latest scientific research to re-evaulate 500 schools.
The repairs are expected to cost about $1.3 billion.
Education Minister George Abbott says the new assessments allow them to prioritize school upgrades and will bring the government closer to the goal of keeping all students safe in case of a quake.
The government also announced that 14 schools in B.C. will be getting $122 million in structural upgrades.
The government started its seismic plan more than a decade ago and in 2005 committed $1.5 billion over 15 years to complete the work.
