WINNIPEG – Behind a fence Winnipeggers can catch a glimpse of the beginning stages of Icetival preparations. Three igloos, various animals and the base of a couple of larger structures have already been built.

“Things are going really well,” said president of Icetival Andy Zhao. “We had some delays on the ice because of the weather.”

The 40 artists from China have been working hard and hope to have the festival ready for visitors by January 25th.

Some of the bigger features will be a giant slide inspired by the legislature, ice bumper cars and an ice bar. Zhao said the artists were expecting much harsher conditions.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“They don’t mind the weather. Some of them even take off their jackets because they’re working and get really warm,” Zhao said. “They like the city.”
