SUDBURY, Ont. — A veteran Liberal fundraiser charged in a byelection scandal in Sudbury, Ont., could go to trial as early as this summer.
Gerry Lougheed was charged in September with one count of counselling an offence not committed and one count of unlawfully influencing or negotiating appointments.
Lougheed is accused of offering a would-be Liberal candidate for a byelection last year a job or appointment to step aside for Premier Kathleen Wynne’s preferred candidate.
He maintains he is innocent.
The case was in court in Sudbury today, where a three-week block was set aside starting July 4 for trial, but lawyers will determine at the next court appearance on March 31 whether that will be for a preliminary inquiry or the full trial.
Lougheed, who has so far been represented in court by his lawyer, will be required to make an appearance May 10 for a confirmation hearing.
