SASKATOON – It’s been said that champions are never completely satisfied with their performance, even when they’re winning. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team is taking that philosophy to heart as it chases a national title this season.

“I think we kind of ended off the first part of the season not super happy with how we played, so that was a bit of a motivator [over the break],” said head coach Lisa Thomaidis on Wednesday.

The top-ranked team in the country boasts a perfect 8-0 record with seven wins coming by double digits, but Thomaidis expects more from her charges in the second half.

“For us to really make a push and be warranting the number one spot we need to be playing better.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The Huskies outscored their opponents by nearly 23 points per game in the first eight contests so it may seem strange for them to be talking about needing to be better. But that constant desire for improvement is just the type of intangible that could prove beneficial down the stretch.

“We can all improve on something so I think that’s something that, going into the second semester, we really need to emphasize,” said fourth-year guard Desarae Hogberg, who is averaging 10.1 points per game this season.

That emphasis is coming at both ends of the floor. The Huskies want to improve on their 77.8 point-per-game output and they hope to do so by playing tougher defence and upping the tempo on offence.

“We’ve been focusing a lot on that. Pushing the ball, just trying to get easy scores,” Hogberg said. “[There’s] nothing wrong with setting up our offence but why not score easy and get easy points.”

“We have a lot of quick guards and even our bigs move very well, so that might mean getting up and pressing a bit more,” added fifth-year guard Laura Dally, who leads the team with 15.6 points per game.

The Huskies hope their pro-active approach will keep them one step ahead of the competition, who would love nothing more than to take down the class of the Canada West conference.

“[The players] know what they want to achieve this year and each weekend is kind of a step along that process, but they’ve got lofty goals and they know that we need to be playing very, very well to achieve them,” Thomaidis said.

The unbeaten Huskies kick off the second half of the season with a trip to Alberta to face the 7-2 University of Calgary Dinos on Friday and Saturday.
