UPDATE: RCMP say they are saddened to report that the 78-year-old man who was struck by a vehicle on Thursday succumbed to his injuries overnight on Sunday. Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Section will continue to work with the B.C. Coroner’s Service in the investigation.
KELOWNA — Police are investigating after an elderly man was hit by a vehicle on New Year’s Eve and is now in serious condition.
Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey says Kelowna RCMP responded to the pedestrian-involved collision in the 1600-block of Springfield Road shortly after 5 p.m.
“The elderly pedestrian had been crossing Springfield Road, from north to south towards the Chances Casino, when he was hit head-on by an eastbound red Suzuki Swift,” says O’Donaghey.
The 78-year-old Kelowna man was dressed in dark clothing and didn’t appear to be in a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident, according to O’Donaghey.
He says the man was taken to hospital by ambulance with potentially life-threatening injuries.
“The driver, a 21-year-old Lake Country man, remained at the scene and is co-operating with police,” says O’Donaghey.
“Police have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor and strongly believe that speed was also not a factor.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Any witnesses are asked to contact Cst. Carsons of the Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Section at 250-980-5353.
