Winter storm blankets Montreal with snow

MONTREAL – Environment Canada has issued a weather warning for the Greater Montreal Area, the Laurentians and the Eastern Townships for Tuesday.

Travelers should expect delays and drivers should brace for hazardous conditions on the roads.

Transports Quebec has already reported a number of accidents on the roads due to current weather conditions.

The city of Montreal is warning drivers to keep a safe distance and is encouraging residents to take public transit.

Montréal-Trudeau Airport recommends travelers double-check all flights before heading to the airport as many flights have been cancelled or delayed.

To help stranded travellers remain in good spirits, the airport authority hired entertainers.

The significant snowfall coupled with wind gusts of up to 60 km/h will translate to blowing snow.

The city of Montreal is expected to get a dumping of anywhere between 15 and 40 cm of the white stuff, which is making some Montrealers happier than others.

Shortly before noon Environment Canada was reporting that 19 cm of snow had already accumulated in the city.

The snow is expected to taper off by Tuesday evening, with snow removal operations set to begin on Wednesday morning in Montreal. All boroughs have until 7 p.m. on Wednesday to start removing snow otherwise they face penalties.

Snow removal across the island will be halted on New Year’s Eve and will start up again on January 2. Drivers are being asked to respect signage and move their cars during snow-clearing operations.
