Thieves caught stealing on camera from vehicle in south Regina

REGINA – A quiet morning in the Hillsdale neighbourhood near Leboldus High School was disrupted by four people looking for unlocked cars, and they were caught on camera.

“As you can see a car is coming here down the street with its lights on. It’s 3:34 in the morning,” said homeowner Jill Thomson as she reviewed footage caught on her security camera of the group.

She recently began installing security cameras on her home. The footage shows a car parked down the block from her house, and two men get out and start checking to see if car doors are unlocked. The pair are eventually joined by two other people.

Unfortunately for Thomson’s friend Rahul Kumar, his car doors were unlocked.

“I came out to start my car and found something is not right in my car,” he explained. “So I went in and I see papers everywhere, my drawer is open and everything is missing.”

Among the stolen items are an air compressor, gym shoes and Kumar’s cheque book. He estimated about $250 worth of his belongings were stolen.

For Thomson the most alarming aspect is how close she came to encountering the thieves. The video shows two of the suspects returning to their vehicle with stolen goods. About 20 seconds later Thomson turns onto the street and enters her driveway.

“I’m suspecting that here the car with the lights on is slowly backing away,” she said while reviewing the video. “I think they thought that I saw them, but then they realize I’m just leisurely walking to the house.”

From there the suspect’s vehicle drives out of the frame. Thomson believes they are picking up the other two robbers who are believed to be down the road at this point.

The matter has been reported to the Regina Police Service. Due to the dark security camera footage it is hard to get a description of the vehicle or the suspects.
