Maritimers face major snowfall

MONCTON – Moncton residents spent much of the day Sunday shoveling themselves out of one of the biggest snowstorms this winter.

Parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were expected to get as much as 20 centimeters throughout the day and evening.

Residents like Paul Russell used a snowblower to clear their driveways early to avoid drifts later in the day.

“I go slowly and gradually get her done, ” he said, noting the snow wasn’t hard to manage.

“It’s nice and soft and its not wet,” he said.

People who took out their vehicles were advised to drive carefully.

Accidents were reported around the city and other parts of New Brunswick.

Walking around was also difficult.

Christina Francoeur said she took her time pushing her stroller.

“There’s a little bit of ice under the snow and especially earlier this morning it was more slippery,” she said.

People living in Nova Scotia also faced blowing snow and ice pellets.

Even leaving the East Coast was a challenge.

Flights were delayed across the Maritimes.

Environment Canada didn’t issue a weather alert for Prince Edward Island.

But RCMP in that province advised people to adjust their driving to road conditions.
