Do you want $60 million for Christmas?

EDMONTON – It could be a very merry Christmas for a lucky lottery ticket customer.

On Friday, the draw will take place for the LottoMax jackpot, which stands at $60 million plus 35 prizes of $1 million.

“It was a spur of the moment thing,” said customer Gillian Dejong after she purchased her ticket.

“I thought, why not? It could be a very Merry Christmas for myself, my community and close friends and family.”

Mary Michailides walked into Jasper Gate Convenience Store for another item but ended up buying a Lottomax ticket.

“I’m thinking $60 million is an outrageous amount of money. Wrapping your brain around $60 million sometimes can be mind-boggling,” she said.

Last week’s $60 million jackpot was not claimed, making this the second draw for the prize. Sixty million dollars is also the maximum amount allowed for a prize.

Christmas Eve is the last day for interested millionaires to buy tickets.

Southgate Lotto owner Linda Shuker said interest in the Christmas Day draw has been high.

“Crazy, just crazy. Everybody wants to win,” she said.

“They want to win it for Christmas. They want to give it to their friends and family. They want somebody to win.”

“It’s nice to think you could be slipping someone $60 million for Christmas,” said Andrea Marantz, spokesperson for Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

Marantz would not comment on how many tickets have been sold but said the holidays seem to be contributing to sales  numbers.

Closing hours for vendors will vary but lottery terminals will shut down at 8:30 p.m. (MST).

The last time the jackpot stood at $60 million was November 6, when it was split between a winning ticket in Edmonton and one in the Maritimes.
