TORONTO – Cinco de Mayo falls on a Saturday this year, and what better way to celebrate than with delicious Mexican food to whet your weekend appetite?

With a little help from Food Network Canada, Globalnews.ca compiled a list of delicious recipes for you to try out on all your festive, Mexican-food-loving friends and family.

Spanish for ‘fifth of May,’ Cinco de Mayo is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla, Mexico (not throughout the country as you might think) but is widely marked across the United States.

Contrary to popular belief, the date does not mark Mexico’s Independence Day, which falls on September 16.

Instead, the holiday commemorates the causes of democracy and freedom during the American Civil War in the U.S., and the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 in Mexico.
