Step-by-step: gift wrapping 101

SASKATOON-  Once you’ve finished all of your holiday shopping, it’s time to wrap up all your gifts to hide under the tree. Aditi Garg has been volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House Midtown Plaza gift wrapping station for the past nine years, and gave us an expert lesson.

Wrapping a box

Step 1: Tools

Make sure to have your scissors, tape and wrapping paper within arms reach. Eric Beck / Global News

Step 2: Measure and trim

You need to have enough paper to fully wrap the width of your box, with about two inches to spare. For the length, it needs to lift at least to the top. Eric Beck / Global News

Step 3: Bring out the tape

Centre your gift on the paper, and tape your first side directly to the box. If you have a jagged edge, using it first will hide it. Eric Beck / Global News

Step 4: Hide your edges

To make a polished crease, fold your edge in before taping. Eric Beck / Global News

Step 5: Folding down the sides

This is where things get tricky. Fold your first side down, snug against the box. Eric Beck / Global News

Step 6: Make a point

Fold both edges to make a 45 degree angle, and tape it to the top of your gift. Eric Beck / Global News

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

Repeat on other side (standing the gift up on the finished side makes it easier). Eric Beck/ Global News

Finishing Touches: Ribbons or bows

If you want to wrap your gift in ribbon, Aditi recommends having nine time to length of the box so that you can add a nice curl to the end.

Awkward shaped gifts

When you gift doesn’t come in a box you have three options: try to wrap it with the above method and probably end up with a gift covered in tape, find an empty box to put it in before wrapping or use the candy technique.

Step 1: Measure your paper

Step 2: Fold in all the edges
