CALGARY – A Calgary charity has collected close to 4,000 backpacks full of gifts for children in need and is ready to ship them off to kids across the province.

This year, ‘Stephens Backpacks’ has dedicated its campaign to Nathan O’Brien. The five year old boy and his grandparents disappeared  more than a year ago and are presumed to have been murdered.

Nathan’s mom says it’s a perfect way to honour her son’s memory.

“I think he would love it. He would love to get a backpack with spider man on it filled with toys and stuffies, which he loved. I think he would be so proud to be part of this. I know he’s proud of us for doing this in his name,” said Jen O’Brien, Nathan’s mom.

Every Christmas, dozens of volunteers stuff backpacks with books, school supplies, candy and toys. The Stephen’s Backpack project is to offer hope in a Christmas backpack gift for children in need.
