WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Humane Society helps a lot of animals, but one puppy recently brought to the animal shelter is in need of extra care.
Mittens, a five-month-old corgi-sheltie mix, was hit by a car a month ago. The animal shelter said he didn’t receive any veterinary care at the time.
Because the puppy had extensive damage and an infection, one of the hind legs had to be removed. The other hind leg was also damaged and will require a prosthetic.
“The puppy doesn’t have a foot pad so he walks directly on the skin over the bones, which is extremely painful,” said Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health. “There is an intact ankle joint, which is fortunate because a brace can be attached to it. Given his small size and friendly disposition, he should adapt with ease.”
Mittens underwent surgery on Friday and will recover in a foster home before being ready for adoption.
