Caught on camera: Officer risks life leaping onto out-of-control 18-wheeler

Dash cam video from a police car in Madison County, Nebraska caught a police officer running across a highway to help stop an 18-wheeler after the driver became incapacitated.

Police had received a 911 call about a reckless driver behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer on Dec. 2nd. When police caught up with the truck, they quickly realized something wasn’t right.

“Deputy Kruid said he got up beside, just to look at the driver, and see if he could get his attention better, and said he [the truck driver] just had the blank stare on his face. Something wasn’t right,” Sgt. Todd Volk told KTIV News.

“As he came by, I could see the driver’s head slumped down and felt he was not conscious and it popped in my head that we need to get this vehicle stopped.”

Volk then leapt into action.

Volk got ahead of the truck and then perfectly ran and leapt onto the cab of the moving truck that was going approximately 30 km/h. Volk was able to apply the brakes and stop the truck.

The driver of the truck reportedly was suffering from a diabetic episode but didn’t realize he was a diabetic beforehand. He was given glucose before being taken to hospital. Volk was told the driver is expected to be okay.
