Wall proud of transparency, ‘kept promises’ heading into election

REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says he’s happy to campaign on his record of transparency.

In a year-end interview with Global News, Wall said his Saskatchewan Party has made good on the majority of its promises over the last eight years.

“We made over 130 promises in 2007. You can check them off. We made promises in 2011 of things we’d do if we were re-elected and also things we would not do, and check them off as well,” Wall said. “We’ve done what we said we’d do.”

Wall’s government did step back this year from a target of eliminating emergency room wait times, set in 2012, as a result of a report suggesting the goal would not be feasible. But the premier makes no apologies for being overly ambitious.

“We will always risk setting goals over risk not setting them, understanding we may face these questions if we don’t quite reach them.”

Wall was asked about the government providing misinformation about problems with carbon capture and SaskPower’s failed smart meter program; in response, he said the unit at Boundary Dam is finally performing up to expectations and pointed to fallout at the Crown (president Robert Watson was fired) following a number of meter fires.

“We’ve been the first to say when we make a mistake, when we fall short, we’re going to admit it. But we have kept our promises around health care wait times, we’ve kept them around tax reduction, around debt reduction.”

“I’d be happy to take that record to the people in March.”
