SASKATOON – Work on Saskatoon’s new Traffic Bridge has officially started. Detour markers on the nearby Meewasin Trail and construction fencing will go up over the next couple of days.

Next week, in-river construction will begin when crews use stone and silt to build a berm out into the South Saskatchewan River. The base will allow vehicles and equipment to drive out onto the water.

After that, the first phase of the demolition of the existing bridge will begin.

“The first stage of berm work is extending right into the middle of the river,” said Dan Willems, special projects manager with the city.

“The plan is for that to be pulled out by April, or by mid-April, before the summer navigation period starts. At that point, the berm will be pulled back closer to the shoreline so it won’t impact river traffic.”
