Buffalo herd creating road hazard on Highway 35 in Saskatchewan

Buffalo braving the cold south of Melfort on Jan. 8, 2015. Mounties are warning drivers to exercise caution on Highway 35 south of Tisdale, Sask. as a herd of buffalo is at large. Dayna MacDonald / Viewer Submitted

Mounties are warning drivers on a Saskatchewan highway about a potential road hazard. It’s not icy conditions on Highway 35 that have police issuing the advisory; it’s a herd of buffalo.

Police say the herd, estimated to be as large as 100 animals, is roaming in the RM of Barrier Valley and has been crossing portions of the highway approximately 25 kilometres south of Tisdale. They have also been spotted on grid roads in the area.

Officials with the RM are working on a plan to corral the animals and are asking people to refrain from chasing or scaring the buffalo as doing so will make it more difficult to corral them.

They are also asking anyone that spots the herd to contact their office at 306-323-2101 to provide the herd’s location.
