Saskatchewan company fined for 2013 workplace death

A Saskatchewan company has been fined for a 2013 workplace death. A worker with Venture Construction was killed on Sept. 12, 2013 when he was struck by a lump of material that fell off a hopper bin near Peerless.

The company pleaded guilty in Meadow Lake provincial court for failing to provide a system of work or working environment that ensured the health, safety and welfare of its workers and fined $51,800.

Four other charges against the company were stayed.

In an unrelated case, a Calgary company pleaded guilty for failing to develop a written procedure to ensure the health and safety of workers who handle or use a flammable substance that may spontaneously ignite.

On July 9, 2013, a worker with Elswick Energy who was reigniting a burner at an oilfield near Midale sustained serious burns.

The company was fined $28,000. Two other charged were stayed.
