Hundreds of jackets stolen from Sally Ann hours before Christmas dinner

WINNIPEG — Roughly 200 brand new winter jackets were stolen from the Salvation Army Booth Center hours before they were going to be handed out at their Christmas dinner.

Staff made the discovery Wednesday morning at the shelter on Henry Street.

The jackets were being stored at the Sally Ann’s “free store,” where families in need can shop at no cost. The donated coats were set to be distributed to those who need them most Wednesday night.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Today is the day where everything we have we give away,” said Mark Steward, the residential manager at the Booth centre. “We save all year for this.”

The jackets were still in bags. Stewart says at some point overnight, the door was pried open, and they were taken.

“Not having these jackets means people are not going to get them and that’s really unfortunate,” Steward added. “This kind of brand new stuff doesn’t come around very often.”
