Monctonians weigh in on the ‘man bun’ trend

MONCTON – Although it’s raised some eyebrows, the ‘man bun’ has become all the rage, according to Ryan Browne from Handsome Devils Barber shop in Moncton.

“There are a lot of difference versions of the man bun, we get a lot of undercuts in the shop. We trim around the side. But when people grow it out, like Nick, they usually like to let it do its own thing,” he said.

He’s talking about one of his customers, Nick Bourque. Nick started growing a man bun about eight months ago.

“It’s the whole untamed out-in-the-wild kind of story to it,” he said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A story that Moncton’s Mitchell Cassie lives every day.

“I just like my hair up out of my face and my girlfriend really likes it,” he said.

But not everyone is so fond of the hairdo.

“It’s not my cup of tea,” said Karl MacKenzie, another barber at the shop.

According to some dermatologists, the man bun may contribute to premature balding in some men. It’s called traction alopecia – the loss of hair from a force that is greater than the hair was designed to have.

So if you are worried about losing your locks, there is another option.

Found mostly online, for men who may not have hair long enough to make an authentic man bun, is the clip-on version.

“I can’t believe you can order a clip-on one,” said Marty Arsenault of Moncton. “I think it’s terrible, worst trend ever.”

Browne says if you are going to join the trend, maybe it’s best to go with the real thing.

“Just grow it if you are going to do it,” he said.
