PENTICTON — An early morning commercial trailer fire in Penticton on Tuesday caused heavy smoke damage inside Save-On-Foods in Cherrylane Shopping Centre.
The Penticton Fire Department was called to a report of a possible fire at the Save-On-Foods at 5:45 a.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief Dave Spalding.
“When they arrived on scene, they found that at the back of the building in one of the loading bays was a fifth wheel commercial trailer that was on fire and producing some heavy smoke,” says Spalding.
Spalding says crews were able to pull the trailer away from the building and extinguish the fire.
“Some of the smoke did get into the Save-On-Foods so they’re working diligently to clean up what they can. There is heavy smoke damage inside Save-On-Foods, there’s a little bit inside the mall.”
He says the fire originated from the trailer but the cause is unknown. RCMP were called in to investigate and say the fire is suspicious in nature; it is being treated as suspected arson.
