TORONTO – A Toronto-area high school had to deal with a rather unusual pest problem when a snake was found slithering inside a photocopier Monday afternoon.

A photograph of the serpent, identified as a DeKay’s Brown Snake, was posted on the Toronto Wildlife Centre’s Facebook page.

“He likely took refuge in the copier because it was warm and dark, a nice cozy place to live,” the post read.

The snake was rescued from a Catholic York Region high school and has since been placed in its own enclosure.

“Because it’s too cold to release him outside right now, he’ll stay at Toronto Wildlife Centre until the weather warms up again in the spring,” the wildlife centre said.

There’s no immediate word on how the snake found its way inside the office machine but wildlife officials said the reptile is harmless to humans.

“DeKay’s Brown Snakes are totally harmless to people and do a great job at pest control in the garden, eating up a lot of pesky slugs,” officials said.

The type of snake usually measures less than 30 centimetres in length and is identified by its brown/gray colour with black spots.
