HALIFAX – Mediated talks are expected to continue today in hopes of averting a strike by some 3,600 hospital workers in Halifax.
Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union were expected to set up picket lines today if no deal was reached Tuesday.
But Joan Jessome, president of union Local 42, has since postponed any work stoppage until 7 a.m. Thursday.
Jessome says she plans to meet with the union membership later Wednesday, though it’s unclear whether there will be an offer to vote on.

Officials at the Capital District Health Authority say a number of surgeries have already been postponed, beds have been closed and outpatient appointments have been cancelled in anticipation of a strike.
The union represents workers in a range of jobs, including nurses, occupational therapists, medical lab technicians and social workers.
